No Premium Reduction To N.C. Students Opting Out Of Abortion Coverage In Campus Health Plan
The students of North Carolina University are now required to purchase a private insurance coverage plan or enroll in the campus plan which offers abortion coverage from this year. Even though the UNC administration had agreed although under the pressure from pro-lifers to let students in the 16 campuses of the UNC system to freely opt out from the abortion coverage of campus insurance plan the students who do opt out might have to pay the same premiums as those who still remain in the plan.
SLFA or Students for Life of America which is a pro-life group established throughout United States with chapters at campus initially called attention to the abortion provision for the campus health insurance plan.
There is a benefit of nearly $500 along with 80 % PPO Preferred Provider Organization coverage is made available under this plan for Elective Abortion. Mary Powers the SFLA communications director told CNSNews that the group was alerted by the North Carolina Right to Life and by UNC students.
She said that they went through and did a careful investigation about what was going on. SLFA is worried that the students opposed to abortion for good reasons but they will still have to pay for the insurance coverage which subsidizes abortion coverage as the costs for the insurance plan are also included in the student’s tuition.
In response to the inquiry, Joni Worthington the UNC vice president for communications said the insurance plan sponsored by the university will be separated into two distinct policies where one would be for students who opt out from the elective abortion benefits and the other for those who do not.
For the students who opposed to the abortion plan can afford just the university health insurance, the plan lets them remove abortion option from their account. However in case the students choose to remove this abortion coverage they would still have to pay the same premium. Unless the students provide a strong proof of private insurance coverage they would automatically be enrolled in campus health insurance plan under Pearce and Pearce, the insurance provider.
According to the 2010-2011 Health insurance plan document of the North Carolina State University the premiums would appear on tuition bills of every semester unless the student has submitted proof of creditable coverage insurance plan at Studentinsurance.com website by waiver deadlines.
